Banjara Textiles and Jewelry from the Jerez Collection
(July 14 - September 11, 2022) The Jerez Collection of textiles and jewelry, handcrafted by the Banjara peoples of India, Pakistan, and Afghanistan, was lovingly assembled over the years by Sherry McDonald Stewart, Daphne S. Nallie, and Daisy S. Gill. A small but stunning selection from the collection is on display in this exhibit. “Banjara” is an umbrella term used by outsiders to describe multiple formerly-nomadic peoples living throughout India, Pakistan, and Afghanistan, who are descended from a single group but now vary in language, in cultural norms, and in name, depending on where they live. There are an estimated 5.6 million Banjaras in India. The Romani of Europe also are believed to be descended from Banjara ancestors.
This porcelain piece is Birte. She was in several national ceramics shows. But she came later on.

I was so surprised I couldn’t speak.

Taken at a ceramic workshop below when we lived at the farm in Snohomish. A retired photographer from Seattle Times took the photo. I helped him set up his tent. He was a very kind man. I recall. I made several nice pieces there. Arms Akimbo for one.

Mike and I and Daisy had been together in Mukilteo, where I lived overlooking the ferry. Later moved to Edmonds awhile before moving to the farm. We spent a lot of time backpacking and hiking in those days. He was the best hiking partner.

Iichiro san I could never forget. It was such a surprise.
Nagaoka Niigata. Nagaoka castle.
Below all my work except the single cup. All the ceramic pieces were in international shows, competitions. Some are in collections. A few graphic pieces of mine too.
The mask is in memory of men who were treacherous and liars. I’ve know a few. Sad note but that’s life I’ve known lovely men to. My soul mate was was a good man. Powerful and kind.
Iichiro was a good friend and we didn’t marry as it was he was much younger than I and needed to have a real family even though he said it didn’t matter. I knew his family wanted grandchildren.
I had quite a few boyfriends. My ex and another man who was my partner for decades as well. Mike. I called him Michael until I learned how unfaithful he was. From then on he was just Mike. Not reliable. My husband. Not worth mentioning I feel.
I never thought any of my life was a mistake but he was and Mike too. I’d like to be younger with more energy.
But I’d mostly like my children to love one another and be happy and safe and take care of one another. I love all my children very much. James, Sally, Daphne, Daisy.
. And grandchildren, John, Karen, Jeremy, Michael and Max. Josh, Jonah, Natalie. And their children. Jolene.
I’ve had wonderful friends. Sylvia, my blood sister. Nadine Shean, Penny, Martha, Marylou, Dickie, aka Georgia, Kathy, Thorne, and now Ashley. A new friend.
My cousin Karen. Jerilynn and Joyce Wilde. Others far back.
My life is less energetic so I’ll leave some memories for posterity. Felix is no longer either us. Not my ex. My good friend Larry. There was also Joe Love. A best friend. Bernard.
My apologies to all I’ve disappointed. This life has been rough.
I use color to cover a very broken heart. I know no one knows it all not did they care I think for the most than I lamented but could never tell others all I’d been through. I felt lamenting was ok. Especially everyone does it. But everyone doesn’t do it to protect others as I had to do. Whatever. There are very cruel people. And it’s challenging to be a woman.
I wish everyone a peaceful life tho.
