From Isaac Shapiro's Book, It Happens By itself. (Photos are mine)

yellow rose
Excerpt from chapter one, I love this:

Yes, beautiful. Simply be. When attention wants to move from This that is unchanging, the moment you notice, simply return attention to yourself. Instant by instant, that’s all. Because through the senses, the entire universe is appearing in you. In This that you are, all time, all space, everything is appearing. Everything that is changing is appearing in That. All of eternity, every known universe, every known reality, every known galaxy is appearing in you. All the gods, all the heavens, all the hells, everything is appearing in you. To know You is to know the source of everything.

It Happens By Itself

Chapter 1

Namaskar, welcome to Satsang.

If there are any questions about peace, enlightenment, and freedom, please feel free to speak. Also, if there is any direct recognition and overflowing from This.

There are a few new people here tonight. Usually there is not much action, unless somebody says something. If you came looking for some entertainment, then you have to provide it. (laughter)

The invitation here is to know yourself. A simple invitation. As simple as it is, when you ask someone, “Who are you?” most people are confused. If this confusion has not finished for you and you would like some assistance, please feel free to ask and we can investigate together. You don’t have to believe anything. Be willing to look for an instant and see what happens in your own experience.

I went to a festival, and at it they had a bonfire. They invited us to write down what we wished for our lives, and throw it into the fire. I put in that I wanted to be guided by my intuition. When I go deep into meditation, I really enjoy it, but when I come out, I have a sense of losing it. Can you give me some insights on this?

We have the experience of feeling separate from God, from our intuition. There is confusion. We have a feeling that we want to step out of the confusion and be at peace, to know Truth for ourselves and to be happy. We think that if we can work, purify, and change ourselves, maybe someday we will be happy.

The only moment that you can ever be happy is this instant. That’s it. You cannot know Truth in the past or in the future.

How can we know Truth now? It is easy. All that we can give to anybody or anything is our attention. Check for yourself and see if this is true. Where your attention is, is what you experience. Correct?

If you put your attention on your toe, you experience your toe, if you put your attention on what you want, you experience longing, and if you put your attention on what is wrong, you experience wrongness or negativity. Where your attention is, is where you are giving all your energy to, in other words, what you are worshipping.
Dungeness

Your attention has been running here and there, after this attraction, that perception, thought after thought, always looking for something to make you happy. Nobody was able to tell you how to be happy, therefore you tried to listen to your intuition, because you felt that you could listen to some wisdom inside yourself, and as a result, your life would be better, more in harmony.

Is it possible to say, “Well, I can do it myself?”

Normally, our attention is focused on our thinking, our perceptions, on evaluating and labeling. You meet somebody and evaluating happens. Can I trust him or her? Am I attracted? Etc, etc. The mind is playing.

Nobody gets the idea to bring their attention to who they are. This instant you are Here. The mind has been running, thought after thought, and we have never had the idea to bring our attention to its source from where thoughts arise.
. dungeness river 05

In this instant everything that exists is changing. However, these changes appear in Awareness, which is not changing. For example, there is space in this room. When we build walls, we have a room and the creation of inside and outside space. If we knock the walls down, the space is still here. It is unchanged whether the walls are here or not. Walls do not alter it. Space is space, but we don’t notice the space, correct?

We define it by something else.

We define it by what we sense. Different experiences appear — happiness, sadness, hot, cold, enjoying, suffering. These experiences come and go. Usually there is thinking; occasionally, not thinking. Every object is changing. Your experience is changing, your body is changing, and your thoughts are changing. Now, look in your own experience. Do you change? You were a young boy, and now you have the body of a man. Inside, do you sense yourself as different?

No.

You don’t feel different, and if you ask somebody who is eighty, they will tell you the same. Beliefs might have changed, the body is changing, yet the essence of you does not feel different at all. You are the same. Speak in this moment of your own experience of this which is unchanging, You.

I want to hear how you speak because up to now you have never spoken about this. Nobody ever invited you to speak about this, not your teachers nor your parents. Nobody invited you to speak about This that is unchanging. What is your experience?

Love.

Yes, and you have been thinking that someone else is the source of love.

Yes.

This is what they sing about in country western songs; “looking for love in all the wrong places.” Most of us believe that love is outside of ourselves, and someone else is necessary for us to feel love. We do not know where to find love.

Now, This that is unchanging, what do you have to do for it?

To connect with it.

Who is connecting with it?

There is nothing in-between. Only getting rid of the hurdles.

What hurdles? What hurdles are there at this moment?

Nothing really. But when I go outside it might start.

Outside of where?

Outside of this space. Outside of love.

How can you go outside of love? Where does love end?

No, it does not end.

Okay. How are you going to go outside of love?

I’m getting distracted.

If I give you a diamond worth five billion dollars, will you forget where you keep it? If you have never had five billion dollars, will you go now and party and leave it on the beach somewhere?

No, no, no.

You won’t be distracted from this diamond.

I would run out of money very quickly. I’d give it to too many people.

This love you can give to as many people as you like; it can never run out. You cannot buy it for five billion dollars. Now, how can you get distracted from love?

Before you were distracted because you did not know love. You thought love came from women, and you were running after them, thinking that one of them is the source of love. Then when that did not work out, another one. Then trying to get the intuition, which one was the correct one, right? Where was love hiding?

Now it is not hiding. I love connecting with it.

There are no hurdles. There never were any. At this moment, you don’t recognize the value of what you have just now discovered. Once you know the secret, nothing can distract you from it. Old thoughts can come up, but they push you back to love, because every time you pick up a thought that hasn’t been seen through yet, it is so painful compared to this love. Once you have found love, you don’t want to kiss anything else.

Is it a matter of love neutralizing the effects of old thoughts? Not trying to shove anything away or leaving them, but neutralizing them?

By simply staying with love every old pattern, based on this idea of non-love, will come up and be seen to be love itself.

The love affair at this moment does not seem overwhelming. I imagined it as a huge experience. Also, it does not seem like it does not exist. It is sort of constant, like a hum.

What you are saying is beautiful. Some people experience themselves as peace, silence, nothing, or everything. The truth is, It cannot be named, and the danger is that people think the experience should be a particular way. You are speaking from your own experience. Once you listen to this hum, really listen to it, really be it, it fills everything. This is the beauty. If you only pay a little attention to it, then you only experience it a little. The more you kiss it, the more you love it, the more it loves you.
 rhodie

Like during meditation in the morning?

This is permanent meditation. The experience you are speaking of now is about knowing who you are. What you are speaking about is Yourself, right? That which is unchanging, Here, always present. To be with Yourself is to be love, peace, and silence. Not as an idea, but actually, Now! This is the ultimate truth. There is none higher than this. This is the end of the search. Once you know this, you know everything. So simple.
pink tulips

I will take that in.

Yes, beautiful. Simply be. When attention wants to move from This that is unchanging, the moment you notice, simply return attention to yourself. Instant by instant, that’s all. Because through the senses the entire universe is appearing in you. In This that you are, all time, all space, everything is appearing. Everything that is changing is appearing in That. All of eternity, every known universe, every known reality, every known galaxy is appearing in you. All the gods, all the heavens, all the hells, everything is appearing in you. To know You is to know the source of everything.

How do we construct our life around love in our daily activities?

Very clear question. Now I have to ask you from your own experience. This instant now, breathing is happening. Who is breathing?

My body.

Okay. Who is seeing?

Somehow seeing is happening.

What are you doing to see? What are you doing to breathe?

It is happening automatically.

Now, how is life happening?

I am initiating things.

Who is this I that is initiating? Let’s find this I now. At this moment, your head is shaking. Who is doing that?

The automatic.

But then we say, “I am doing everything.” This is arrogance, isn’t it? It is a lie.

Yes, I am not doing anything.

But we think that we are initiating, yes?

Yes.

Okay. Find out who is initiating.

In this moment, I am not initiating. Everything is happening, and love and support surround me.

Even this I that is surrounded by love, look at what this is. Up to now you have been imagining that you are somebody. When you simply keep your attention on the truth of yourself, on this “unchanging,” then all the habits to think a certain way will reveal themselves and show themselves to be mirages that give the appearance of suffering. You will find that daily life has always taken care of itself and will always take care.

As funny as that sounds, there is nothing you have to do, because you cannot control anything. There is not a you to do it! If you earnestly look for the you that is supposed to be doing everything, you will find there is nobody. This becomes your own experience that is absolutely unshakeable. Who is it that you think you are? Really check this out. You will make a fantastic discovery.

It is beautiful.

This is your first time in Satsang, and immediately you wanted to know. Beautiful! Somehow there has to be a ripeness to hear. If you have beliefs and are attached to them, then you cannot know this. When you are really willing to look for yourself, or if it happens by grace, then you realize! Once you know and you notice that different thoughts come up by themselves, you either keep returning to This that is unchanging, your own Self which is always present, or you investigate the thought/feeling and see if it is true and what you get for believing it.

You will find that something interesting starts to happen. We have a stream of thoughts, which gives the feeling there is something wrong and that you need to get or do something to be happy. For example, that you have to meditate and search, work on yourself, or some strategy to try to become happy.

The moment you keep quiet with who you are, what is needed? You bathe in the ocean of love. This is too simple for most people.

But we still do physical things.

Even when physical things are happening, there is awareness of no doer. Attention can stay with You. You can check this now. We can talk together, and by simply staying with You, the talking is happening in space. Somehow the whole perception of everything is different.

Yes, it is growing.

In one instant. Just like that.

There is a constant pressure from society. If you are talking to somebody they always want to know who you are. They want to know what you identify with. This could be a distraction.

Of course, it could be a distraction, but have you ever fallen in love with a woman?

Yeah, all the time.

When you fall in love with a woman, not much will distract you. Even eating and sleeping don’t distract you. You can only think of this person.

Not quite that much. But yeah. I did feel like cutting my whole day short.

This is a love affair with Truth.

Oh yeah, okay. (laughter)

Beautiful.

So falling in love with Love.

Falling in love with Love itself.

And then it is always there.

Of course.

Yes, in abundance.

You know the Secret.

Okay, ways to fall in love with yourself?

Just this instant. Any way is a distraction, because a way is a postponement. A way means not now but later, in other words, a postponement. To be in love with Love means to be it, walking down the street, eating, making love, and playing music. Everything, everything! You are simply Love Itself.

You can be in prison or in any circumstance; it does not stop you from this. Nothing can stop you from being with yourself. This is not dependent on time, place, circumstance, or anything else.

You may still be active, but you are with yourself. Then everything you say comes from that, and that shines through. Others may feel that and be attracted or not.

Thank you, that was good.

One correction, not “was” good, “is” good!

Oh, “is” good! Fine. That solves that. (laughter) Next.

~~

It is so beautiful here tonight.

Every night, no?

Yeah. Tonight I understood something. When I first met you and I sat with you the first two years, it was so beautiful, very strong. It was emptiness. There was no one here. It was continuously going into this nothing, and it is not like that now. It is full, and it is empty!

Holy Places and Night flowers

Memorial Day backpack trip to the convergence of Royal Creek and The Dungeness River: Here the water is glacier blue, large boulders are all around this area, covered with moss, and ferns grow from them. I guess they were moved by Glacier activity. This trail is near Sequim, and way up the mountain, the hike in is only a mile to this campsite, and Royal Basin is about 6 miles from there. It is stunningly beautiful place to hike, the shame is, few hikers I have seen seem to see the incredible beauty there, being so busy hiking. There is one area with a campsite that is so green, and the light is soft and muted, it is a holy place.

From Yogananda, on Tennyson; of interest....

The poet Tennyson has left us, in his Memoirs, an account of his repetitious device for passing beyond the conscious mind into superconsciousness:
"A kind of waking trance-this for lack of a better word-I have frequently had, quite up from boyhood, when I have been all alone," Tennyson wrote. "This has come upon me through repeating my own name to myself silently, till all at once, as it were out of the intensity of the consciousness of individuality, individuality itself seemed to dissolve and fade away into boundless being, and this not a confused state but the clearest, the surest of the surest, utterly beyond words-where death was an almost laughable impossibility-the loss of personality (if so it were) seeming no extinction, but the only true life." He wrote further: "It is no nebulous ecstasy, but a state of transcendent wonder, associated with absolute clearness of mind."

Letters from Bodhiavasa in Wales ( Avasa and Shakti)

Avasa For all my friends who met Avasa and Shakti when they came for Satsang here at my home.

HI Sherry
No one hears from em much these days as I do not get
on line very often , Life changes and the days of
email contact are fewer.
We are good and have just returned from Sicilly where
all went down well for a first visit and we have been
asked back already. We have had to cut down on working
as we are inundated with people inviting us all over
the world. We are in Italy and house hunting as we need
abase, many folk are saying that as soon as we find a
place they are moving into the neighborhood to be
with us there. WE do hope to be in the US again in the
winter as Austin has been calling loudly as well as
other places and also Canada. Its lovely that so many
people appreciate what we share but it spreads us a
bit thin if we don’t slow it down and do things in our
time,, WE both often think of you guys and rest assured
that you are always in our hearts.
BIG hug to you and all the best to Mike.
Love Avasa

5/30/05
Hi Sherry
Its strange for me, I hear what you are saying and I
ghear similar from many people who attend satsang for
the first few times and i cannot see the problems that
they talk about, when the attention is on the
Awareness all else dissolves leaving only this
beautiful GLASSY ESSENCE, as Shakespear named it.
Many of the folk now in satsang rest in this or at
least touch it and taste it in satsang and it is
becoming more and more familiar to people. When new
folk turn up they are immediately absorbed into the
presence that the others are rested in and it is
infectious.
Maybe you should get some money for a flight and a trip
to Italy and chill out here with us for a couple of
weeks and meet the friends here and share this space.
The trips into the countryside I agree are a great
idea, I would love to come fishing there, but the best
company is not nature but the company of people rested
in this, the source of nature.
Regardless of what you say I SEE a big difference in
you now to when we first met, as long as I see this it
will continue to change your inner structures for
clearer ones when you yourself are not so clear, I am
clarity itself so how can you lose?
A big hug to you and all my best regards to Steve.

Time Goes by

I visited my friends; Kim, David, Dianne, and Matt this Sunday. They were having a block party. At least 4 homes were open and serving, drinks, main courses, desserts, etc.
It was in Edmonds, and so nice to meet all those friendly folks, and see their homes, and what they had done with them; painting, remodeling kitchens, etc. I thoroughly enjoyed myself. I took photos for Kim, but many didn't turn out very well for some reason, people moving looked like ghosts! Scare ME!

Connecting with friends, new and old, makes life feel really good! I don't live on their block, and I just wandered in, but I was made to feel so welcome that I felt I lived there! Maybe next time I will have one here at my house for my neighbors, such a great idea, Just think, we could all begin connecting, and who knows what might happen in this world if we connected again..Wow!

I headed over to the peninsula Saturday alone to go to the Dungeness again, but when I finally found it, the winds were howling, and the rain was coming soon, I decided not to hike in and camp alone. One of Kim's neighbors that I met Sunday said that was a good decision. He was a Mountaineer.

On my way home a big storm blew in and I wonder what kind of night it must have been way up there where I was planning on camping ...alone! I have rarely seen so much rain here. It was like a flash flood! Strange weather last few weeks, but I guess everything is going to be nice for Memorial Day.

As Time Goes By

Yesterday I joined my farm friends for a small mask making workshop alone with Randa’s group on manifesting. Six masks were made in all, and everyone seemed to have fun out there on that big porch while it rained, and then birds sang a thank you song for the sunshine returning, ok, slightly.

I completed a test fire on my new kiln, and it doesn’t even need to be calibrated. I will do a bisque fire as soon as these masks are ready, and we can raku after that. I am asking they do their masks in B&W, but to be honest, I would love to offer color.

The B&W idea came from realizing there are not any books on contemporary masks, and many books on even glazes, which should be in living color, are in B&W due to costs, but what use is a book on glazes in B&W? So I decided to try to get masks made in B&W for a book of masks on B&W. Right? Makes sense! or maybe not! :)

Steve and I cut boards for work areas just prior to everyone showing up. It worked out well, I will pick the masks up soon and bring them here to dry I think. I am hoping to do the raku at the farm.
I am sure everyone will be happy with their masks, and have something to take home to hang on their walls. They don’t yet know what a wonderful experience they will be having with raku.

The group is interesting, people trying to manifest what they want, people always manifest what they want, however, we are all doing that all day, everyday. Changing your awareness of what you want is the hard part, becoming aware that you are in fact creating your reality, and maybe what you are creating is not so great as what it could be is an awareness that sooner or later, is may be time to come to in life.

Change of this nature, after a lifetime of careless creating can be difficult. Especially because ego is so entrenched, and people cannot see it when it is so obvious to others. We are alway able to see others short comings, but the real power comes from seeing your own, and earnestly wanting change. Not wanting to be the leader, wanting to teach, wanting to be in charge of others visions, not in speaking for others, or judging others, but just knowing for yourself that your life could be better.

And that in the end, after the seeing is asking, and waiting, and just being with a stillness in waiting that brings about all wonderful things. Life is living us, you see. It is not that we are living life, life is living us. All that we can do is see what life wants to do , and allow to to do so wonderfully, perfectly, without interference on our part. If we can see with enough humility, we begin to have the grace to let go of all that is less than the divine purpose we all share, allowing life to live us, beautifully and perfectly. In this a highest purpose is fulfilled for all of us. It is the most we can do, and if we do this, we will be content, and bring healing, and love to everyone.

Farm friends, and friends that live nearby

My friends live all over the world. Japan, Canada, Austrailia, Mexico..all over the US.
I love these people and sometimes we write, and sometimes we just get in touch now and again, but it is always true they are in my heart. Some live here close to me, and some of these folks are just like family, whether old friends like Kim and Diane,( Mother and daughter) who date back to my college days, and lived where nearby then, and now, so many many miles away from where we originated. Well I have landed here from PA. From one coast to the other in a span of one lifetime.

Then my farm friends, a long story about the farm, I won't begin today, but I will be writing about these influences, and how my life is enriched by these local friends as time moves on. I think you wil find it to be an interesting story. "As time goes by"
Today I meet Steve at 11:30 to get a new plug fror my new kiln, and some wood to cut for use in my ceramics projects. Yesterday, he and Linda ( astrology fame) went skating and bike riding together at the trail in Snohomish. Linda rode her bike, Steve and I skated, and I had my ipod whhich I shared with Steve. We sang, laughed, and had so much fun together, We all care about each other, and we are like family. I better run, I have to meet Steve soon.
PS. I have my new trusty pedometer, and I have to try for 10,000 steps a day, yesterday I came up 3,000 short, and I skated 4 miles or so...?

beautiful day

foggy days
Most people see the sun shining and say, “ Oh, it’s a beautiful day.” I, on the other hand, see the fog, like this morning, and say, “Wow, it’s a beautiful day!” I love fogbanks! It is so beautiful, I can hardly resist going out and shouting about how wonderfully perfect fog feels on my face, and how beautiful it colors the world.
Some people can't get enough sunshine, I can't get enough fog!

Arms Akimbo

ARMS AKIMBO
[Q] From Sharlene Baker, USA: “Since akimbo means ‘In or into a position in which the hands are on the hips and the elbows are bowed outward,’ why the redundancy of arms akimbo? And where did this unusual word come from, anyway?”
[A] It’s certainly one of the odder-looking words in the language. The first spelling recorded was in kenebowe, which turns up in a work called The Tale of Beryn that dates from 1400. This looks as though it ought to come from an Old Norse source that meant something bent into a curve, but it has never been found. (The last element in the word is essentially the same as our bow for a curve.) The phrase went through several shifts, variously being written as on kenbow and a kembo, arriving at our modern form in the eighteenth century.
Strictly speaking there’s no redundancy, as the word could in theory be applied to anything bent into a curved shape. But from the very earliest recorded references, it seems to have been used exclusively in reference to that characteristic position of the arms, so the phrase arms akimbo has for many years been a fossil idiom, with the redundant arms given respectability by convention.
Though at first it was a neutral phrase, the posture it describes is one that implies defiance, aggressiveness or confidence, and these emotions have become attached to the phrase. Charles Reade used it in The Cloister on the Hearth: “Suddenly setting her arms akimbo she told him with a raised voice and flashing eyes she wondered at his cheek sitting down by that hearth of all hearths in the world”; and Anne Brontë wrote in The Tenant of Wildfell Hall that “Mr Hattersley strode up to the fire, and interposing his height and breadth between us and it, stood with arms akimbo, expanding his chest, and gazing round him as if the house and all its appurtenances and contents were his own undisputed possessions”.

It has come to my attention that butterflies are being bred and sold for release at weddings, etc. They range in price from 65.00 to 100.00 per dozen in containers that release a bunch, or about 12.00 each in personalized envelopes. I wanted to buy some butterflies, we seem to have a shortage here where I live. So I e-mailed a place and they said Washington doesn't allow you to buy butterflies from out of state. Maybe that is what our apple maggot quarantine is about?
At any rate, I am a little disappointed that I can't get flutterbees for my garden. I have learned they love milkweed for their larvae to eat. I am prepared to plant milkweed for butterflies to come live with me.

Invasion of the slugs

slugsLast year I planted some sunflowers. They grew up to about 4 feet, and had nice heads on them, the stalks were think, about 1.5 inches round. The next day, the head was gone on 2 of them, soon they all disapeared. Where is that slug, he must be some predator by now, eating his way to the tropics to find more and more food to feed his expanding girth! Ok,. so maybe it isn't one 5 ft long slug, but a pack of slugs. you don't want them in your neighborhood!
